Working in Central West NSW

What the ground is like, and who owns what.

The Central West is regional work on a different footing from Sydney: Orange, Bathurst, Dubbo, Parkes and the towns between them are growing around health, education and mining services, the Inland Rail alignment through Parkes and Narromine, and the renewable energy zone works around the region. Each town owns its own water and sewer, so the plans, standards and the people to ring are different in every council area, and the records for the older town networks are often sparse.

Essential Energy supplies the electricity across the region, the councils supply water, sewer and stormwater, reticulated gas exists only in some towns and the Great Western, Mitchell and Newell highways and the Main Western rail line are Transport for NSW and ARTC corridors. The ground runs from basalt and clay soils around Orange to the river gravels of the Macquarie at Dubbo and Bathurst, and our crews bring the full EM, GPR and vacuum excavation kit on each trip so the method can change with the ground.

FAQ

Utility locating in Central West NSW: common questions.

Who owns the water and sewer in Central West towns?

The local council in each: Orange City, Bathurst Regional, Dubbo Regional, Parkes Shire and so on. We work from each council's plans and deliver to its standard, with Essential Energy plans for the electricity network.

Do you travel to Orange, Bathurst and Dubbo regularly?

Yes. Central West work is scheduled in runs so several sites are covered on one trip, which keeps the mobilisation cost down for each client. Urgent jobs are mobilised individually.

Can you support Inland Rail and renewable energy projects?

Yes. We locate and survey for the civil contractors and designers on rail, substation and transmission works across the region, with the Rail Industry Worker and Transport for NSW accreditations those sites require.

Is radar effective in Central West soils?

It varies. Basalt-derived clays around Orange absorb the signal; the gravels and sands along the Macquarie River read well. We bring EM, GPR and vacuum excavation and use whichever the ground allows.
