Working in Inner West

What the ground is like, and who owns what.

The Inner West is old ground. Leichhardt, Marrickville, Newtown and Balmain were built out by the early 1900s on brick sewers, cast iron water mains and tram-era power runs, and much of what is under the street today has been replaced, abandoned or rerouted at least once without the plan catching up. The former industrial land along the Parramatta River and the Cooks River carries fill, buried footings and old tanks under the warehouse conversions and apartment sites that replace it.

WestConnex and the Rozelle Interchange moved services across Haberfield, Rozelle and St Peters; the Sydney Metro conversion of the Bankstown line through Marrickville and Dulwich Hill and the Inner West light rail add Transport for NSW corridors. Ausgrid supplies the electricity, Sydney Water the water and sewer, Jemena the gas and the Inner West and Canada Bay councils the stormwater. Ground is shale and clay with sand along the rivers.

FAQ

Utility locating in Inner West: common questions.

Why are old Inner West services hard to locate from plans?

Because the plans were drawn for the original network and many services have been relined, abandoned or moved since. Abandoned cast iron and brick lines still show on radar and EM, so the field locate and a CCTV trace are the only way to know which line is live.

Can you find buried tanks and footings on former industrial sites?

Yes. Underground storage tanks, old slabs and footings and filled cellars are mapped by radar and EM and surveyed onto the plan for the environmental consultant and the demolition contractor.

Do you work near WestConnex and the Metro conversion?

Yes. Our crews hold the Transport for NSW accreditation and work under the corridor and tunnel-site permit conditions across Rozelle, Haberfield, St Peters and the Bankstown line.

Who owns the services in the Inner West?

Ausgrid for electricity, Sydney Water for water and sewer, Jemena for gas, Telstra and NBN Co for communications and Inner West or Canada Bay council for stormwater.
