Working in Sydney Metropolitan

What the ground is like, and who owns what.

Greater Sydney is three distinct grounds for a locator. The sandstone and sandy soils east of Parramatta let ground penetrating radar read well below a metre; the Wianamatta shale and reactive clays of the Cumberland Plain to the west soak up the radar signal, so electromagnetic tracing, sondes and potholing carry more of the work; and the reclaimed and filled land around the harbour, Botany Bay and the Parramatta River hides abandoned services under decades of fill.

Asset ownership is split too. Ausgrid runs the electricity network across the east, north and inner west, Endeavour Energy the west and south west, Sydney Water the water and wastewater across the whole basin, Jemena the reticulated gas, and Transport for NSW the state road and rail corridors with their own access and accreditation rules. Our Lindfield office puts a crew within an hour of most sites in the basin, and LCG holds the TfNSW and Sydney Water accreditations the corridor work needs.

FAQ

Utility locating in Sydney Metropolitan: common questions.

Who owns the underground services in Sydney?

It depends where you are. Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy for electricity, Sydney Water for water and sewer, Jemena for gas, Telstra, NBN Co and the private fibre carriers for communications, and the local council for stormwater. Transport for NSW owns the road and rail corridor assets. The Before You Dig Australia enquiry returns plans from each, and we read them all before the locate.

Does ground penetrating radar work across Sydney?

It works well on the sandstone and sandy ground of the north, east and south, and less well on the clays of the west, where the signal is absorbed within a metre. We plan the method for the ground: GPR where it reads, EM and potholing where it does not.

How quickly can a crew get to a site in Sydney?

Standard jobs are usually booked within a few business days, and emergency and night call-outs run 24/7 across the metropolitan area from our Lindfield office.

Do you cover the whole of the Sydney basin?

Yes. From the CBD and the harbour suburbs to Penrith, Campbelltown and the Hawkesbury, plus the Central Coast, the Illawarra and regional New South Wales from the same team.
